What is a Data Center?

Client Brief: The goal here was to create something fairly straight-forward that could educate the general public on what a data center is, how large they can be and the amount of resources they consume.

Role: Art Direction, 3D animation, Motion Graphics, Compositing.

Process: I worked closely with the Journalist and Climate editors to make sure the script wasn’t too long and also had some interesting graphical statistics I could work with. To save time we found some royalty free models to work with. I further customized these to create something unique for the interior and exterior of the data center. Wrapping things up with some simple motion graphics to increase accessibility. Below is are wire frame, draft renders and final renders. Full article here.

Droughts and Floods

Client Brief: This was something the Journalist and Climate team had been wanting to explain for a long time, but didn’t have the tools to do so visually. The topic of droughts vs floods are often used to argue down the existence of climate change so we needed to create something that explained how both exist.

Role: Art Direction, 3D animation, Motion Graphics, Narration.

Process: The Journalist and I started with a call to a climate and water scientist to get a base explaination of the process. Then I asked a number of questions to make sure I had a good idea of what was happening. The Journalist wrote a rough script to which the editor and I made some adjustments to increase understanding and speak to visual cues. To double check my plans before modeling I sketched out a mini diagram of the primary parts of the animation (below). As all these things are connected I wanted the viewer to be able to see the whole process at once instead of via cuts. Full article here.

Gulf Spill Workers Payouts

Client Brief: There was a story coming down the line about how many…or how few really of the clean up workers from the BP oil spill actually received payouts. Because we can often be desensitized to reading numbers. There was a desire to has a visual representation of how many human lives were impacted.

Role: Art Direction, 3D animation, Motion Graphics.

Process: This script was pretty straight forward, so no noodling was really required. Originally the editor had an idea of putting these people in a pie chart. I thought it could be more impactful to have them form an oil drop. I first customized a prebuild human model then went to town with Cinema 4D and the cloner. Full article here.
