Each Morning and Each Evening

Here are 2 pieces inspired by the poetry of my friend Kevin Dublin. The first one each morning was done for San Francisco Beautiful’s Muni Art Contest in 2018. The theme was poetry so naturally I chose one of his pieces to inspire one of my 8. The following year I asked him to write a companion piece to his original to inspire a companion piece of art.

Each Evening
Face me. We’ve made our daily wars
Let’s both leave enemies at the front line
I’ll kiss you, kiss again, accept kisses
From our large, warm lips: survival
Under clear night sky: survival
Drinking gourd spilling into our complexions
‘Til our whole bodies are kin to shadow
Each evening, like Rorschach inkblots, lips lock
You Black. You beautiful
By Kevin Dublin

Each Morning
my skin is so dark
it makes night against your body—
my body, your first evening
By Kevin Dublin
